Dear Apple

I know you have a ploy to get people to upgrade to your “newest” products when they are released.

You’re required too, right?

My iPad is “useable,” but it does this thing where it crashes and takes my out of the app I’m in (whether it’s Safari, Mail, or an app I downloaded) when I’m in the middle of doing something. And there’s about a 10 second delay, so if I say, “Oh, no big deal, I’ll just click back into the app and finish what I was doing,” what I did in the last ten seconds or so won’t be there (for instance, typing an email). It’s so irritating!

So this is what Apple has done: it IS possible to “restore” your iPad through iTunes, but doing so will not take you back to the old iOs 4 that came on the iPad when it was bought. No. That iOs, and any iOs that is on your Apple device when you decide to update it because you’re prompted by Apple who “recommends it,” is deleted once you agree to update. Therefore, if the upgrade isn’t really what your device needs to function properly (as is the current case for any 1st generation iPad users after the iOs 5 update), then you’re screwed!!

You can’t go back to an old iOs because Apple won’t allow those settings to be saved in iTunes, or anywhere, because they don’t WANT your older device to work, they want you to buy a new one!

Can you really blame them? This is the perfect scheme because once people are tired of their iPad crashing when they’re trying to be productive on it, they’ll BUY A NEW ONE, OR, they’ll pay Apple to give them advice they could’ve found elsewhere on the internet. And there’s no way to get the iPad back to iOs 4, but the Apple people won’t tell you that until you try to restore, reset, restart, blah blah blah….

In conclusion, don’t buy an Apple device unless it’s not an iPad, OR, you take a vow to never agree to the updates.

Too Good Not To Share

I know this is a simple recipe, and maybe you’ve heard every pasta combination in the book, but I LOVE this alternative to a can or jar of tomato sauce.

Pasta: whole grain and milled with flaxseed spaghetti noodles
Boil pasta for 5-10 minutes. Begin cooking other ingredients while pasta boils.

Toppings: 1 tsp. olive oil, 1 roma tomato (quartered then sliced), 1 garlic clove (finely chopped), 1 tbsp. kale greens (shredded off of stems), about 6 large carrot chips (finely chopped), a dash of black pepper, and a dash of cayenne pepper
Heat olive oil in a small skillet on low to medium heat and saute all ingredients for about as long as it takes to boil the pasta. Drain pasta, and add to pan of vegetables. Toss in pan for about 2 minutes, then serve.

So simple, but you’ll definitely love the aroma that fills your home after making this!

My Clean Eating Journey Update!

Hey guys! I’m coming up on my third week of my clean eating journey! It’s taken me a while to get in the habit of writing my meals down in a journal, preparing my food almost immediately after purchasing it (like washing and cutting/chopping vegetables and fruits) and not being tempted to eat out despite my ever-persistant fiance. The truth is, I like this new lifestyle. I don’t get headaches or stomach aches anymore, and I don’t crave bad things like french fries like I used to either! (that alone is an accomplishment) So now all I need to do is convince Aj to join me in this new clean eating way of life. He claims he is happy just the way he is, but I seem to have more energy than he does now. This is probably the biggest difference in eating clean and eating whatever you want: the energy! I have done cardio 3 times so far this week as well as working out muscles I haven’t worked out in at leaast two years! It’s a great feeling! Did I mention I love this whole eating clean thing?

The Perks of Clean Eating

Image

Wow! So it’s only been a week that I’ve been on a diet free of almost ALL processed foods, and already I feel better! You may think that you can’t live without eating processed foods nowadays because pretty much everything in the grocery store is processed in some way, but it isn’t impossible! Also, I’m trying to shed about 25 pounds and build muscle in the process. And actually, I’d like to keep eating this way for as long as I can! I kept a food diary this week so I would remember everything I had each day. In fact, I’d like to share with you one of those days.

(Keep in mind that I’m trying to eat just enough to nourish my body and keep my metabolism up during the day and during exercise. Some people may need to eat less or more depending on their own person body type!)

Breakfast: one banana; fat free vanilla greek yogurt with almond granola
Mid-morning snack: strawberries
Lunch: one whole wheat tortilla with tomatoes, avocado, chopped onions, lettuce, feta cheese, pepper, and red wine vinegar; the other half of my avocado on the side, sliced, with garlic, lime juice, and pepper
Afternoon snack: chick peas with butter and pepper
Dinner: Lean Cuisine Glazed Chicken with Rice and Green Beans (Lean Cuisine’s have NO preservatives!!!)
Had lost of water to drink throughout the day.

I’d like to say that I have started to eat a diet completely free of processed foods but this is not the case. Some foods, especially dairy items, are hard to come by unprocessed. So as long as you’re keeping the process ones at a bear minimum, you’re doing better than most people out there, and better yet, you’re helping your body out by not making it work so hard! It’s important to eat as many fruits and vegetables everyday. If you’re like a lot of people I know, this may come as a challenge. OR, you might be like I am: absolutely in LOVE with fruits and vegetables! Because of this, the transition of cutting out most processed foods and eating better things for me wasn’t a hard one. I feel for the ones who have problems eating vegetables and fruits, but there are ways to overcome these problems!

I Heart My Heart!

In case you didn’t already know, February is Heart Health Month! And did you also know that Cardiovascular Disease is the leading cause of death in the United States? More than any cancer! Also, 1 in 3 women die from this disease alone! That’s more than all cancers combined! I don’t hear much about what people my age should do about prevention and such, mostly just women in their 30′s. But really good habits like exercising and eating all of the right things are so hard to start and keep when you haven’t had them most of your life. That’s why I’m taking a vow to start this month.

I’m so inspired by people in my life who have thrown their lives away with food, laziness, smoking, and lack of exercise. Our bodies are supposed to be taken care of by us. There are certain things that can hold us back; lack of modivation, encouragement, a shorcoming we were born with… But all of these things aren’t inevitable. They’re managable! And I don’t think there’s enough awareness out there. The statistics are proof of that!

So instead of giving your a link to a website you might not actualyl go to, I thought I’d post a few things here that you can do to reduce your risk of getting heart disease and start taking care of your heart like your heart your’s, too!!!

  • Go to bed an hour earlier. We’re all guilty of skipping a full-night’s rest that we “think” we don’t need, and just sleeping enough to “get by.” Wrong! Getting a full nights sleep, seven to eight hours, reduces stress hormones significantly. Lack of sleep increases these hormones and puts you at higher risk of having a heart attack.
  • Have a piece of dark chocolate several times a week.  Now this got my attention. If it has the word “chocolate,” I’m in! Eating dark chocolate, which contains chemicals called flavanoids, helps keep your arteries flexible.
  • Take a multivitamin. This is a simple way to get a daily dose of the vitamins and mineral’s you need. Just leave the bottle by your toothbrush and you’ll have no excuse for forgetting to take it!
  • Eat fish at least once a week. There are several healthy fish you can eat, but the healthiest is salmon which contains a ton of omega-3′s that are crucial to your diet. A piece of fish a week (or more!) helps reduce rapid and irregular heartbeats.
  • Last, but not least, drink water every 2 hours. Drinking an 8oz glass of water every two hours helps keep you hydrated and also kee blood flowing regularly. Don’t like water? Substitute juice for some of the water, just keep far away from the soda; soda is in no way beneficial

Mom Update: The Mean Cancer Monster Won’t Get The Best of Her

20111012-060630.jpg
As I sped to the doctor’s office yesterday morning to receive the news about my mom’s breast cancer, all that I could do was pray to God that she would be able to have a lumpectomy and radiation, and that she wouldn’t have to be poked and prodded at anymore after this. So when I arrived, that’s exactly what I got: good news! She will have surgery next Tuesday, and they will also be determining if she will need chemotherapy. This is what she wanted to avoid, but they said it was probable because the tumor measures 1cm. I’m just so thankful that they have a plan to get rid of this awful thing. Whatever it takes to make her chances of having cancer again as minimal as possible…that’s all I want!

She is receiving a lot of support from her family and friends at this time, and it’s very much appreciated I’m sure.

*October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I strongly encourage every woman to keep herself in check. Early detection is always best!!!*

Lovelovelove,

And We Wait.

As you know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. (That would be why you are seeing pink everywhere) Unfortunately, this takes a whole new meaning for me this year. My mom just found out she has a tumor that has a 75% chance of being malignant. Not sure if anyone reads these posts anyways, but if you do and you’re a believer, would you please keep her in your prayers? We will find out the results on Wednesday.

Thanks & God bless

–Tori
